Expert Coffee Gear Reviews & Buying Guides
Somewhere around your third $6 latte of the week, the math starts doing itself in your head. That’s usually the moment people start Googling an espresso machine with grinder under 500, half-expecting to find nothing but toys that hiss weakly and produce brown water with delusions of crema. Good news: that’s not 2026 anymore. The … Read more
Here’s the argument that’s been running in coffee forums since the first espresso machine grew a grinder out of its hood: is an all in one espresso maker vs separate grinder setup actually the smarter buy, or is it just the more convenient one? Those are not the same question, and conflating them is how … Read more
Here’s a confession: the first time I watched someone pull a shot from an espresso machine with built in grinder, I assumed the grinder part was a gimmick — a marketing sticker slapped on a regular machine to justify a higher price tag. Then I watched the beans go in whole, heard that satisfying little … Read more
Somewhere between a hotel coffee maker that tastes like hot brown regret and a $4,000 Italian boiler sitting on your kitchen counter, there’s a strange, wonderful category of gear: the portable lever espresso machine. The la pavoni europiccola is a chrome-and-brass, direct-lever espresso machine that has been hand-built in Italy since the early 1960s, and it’s still one of the most recognizable pieces of coffee equipment a person can put on a kitchen counter. It’s the espresso machine that shows up in movies as set dressing, the one your … Read more
There’s a particular kind of quiet that happens right before a lever machine gives up its shot. The boiler hisses low, the portafilter sits locked and warm, and for a second the whole kitchen holds its breath while a spring does the one job it was built for. That pause is basically the entire pitch … Read more
Somewhere around your third week of pulling shots on a pump machine, a strange thought creeps in: what if the machine is doing too much of the thinking for me?
